Prepping your Outdoor Living Spaces for Football Season

Are you ready for some Football?

As summer comes to a close and the kids get ready to go back to school, there is one really great consolation prize – FOOTBALL! What better way to enjoy this sporting season than by spending Sundays catching the game in your outdoor living space. Below are some tips on Prepping your Outdoor Living Spaces for Football Season. Follow these great playbook tips for prepping your outdoor living spaces for football season.

Tackle TV Solutions – Most importantly, you need a big screen and well-planned sound system to catch all the action. Outdoor viewing parties can easily be interrupted by weather – here are a few ways to prepare.

  • Pay attention to placement. Putting the television in a well-shaded area, such as under an eave, will make it easier to see the screen.
  • For a safer and more durable screen, invest in an all-weather television. An outdoor movie screen is another option.

Custom built TV enclosure with electric cover

  • Build a weatherproof enclosure around your television to protect it when not in use.  Go to Checkout our Custom built TV enclosure with electric cover.  Check out this video and watch how it works.
This is sure to impress your guest and insure the best protection for your big screen.
  • Some homeowners prefer to just bring an indoor television outside when it’s game time.
  • Another option for those who are cautious of having outdoor electronics is to connect your indoor living area with an outdoor viewing area – through the use of folding or sliding patio doors. This way you can sit outside, while viewing the game on the inside television. Just make sure the screen is large enough and properly placed so it can be seen from every angle.

Offer Sideline Seating– Your outdoor viewing area should offer tons of comfortable seating, making it a much better alternative than going to a nearby bar and sitting awkwardly on a sticky barstool. We recommend weatherproof materials for cushions and throw pillows.

Don’t Fumble On Food Formation – Let’s be honest, food is one of our favorite things about football season. An outdoor kitchen lets you keep food, beverages and supplies nearby, allowing you to host a better party. It’s easy to throw hotdogs and hamburgers on the grill, or you can really impress your guests with an outdoor pizza oven. You may also want to consider having a Billy Parker Exteriors install a keg or mini fridge to keep chilled beverages close by. Make clean up easy with a nearby trash compacter.

Take A Halftime Bathroom Break – Just like halftime in football, your guests will need to take bathroom breaks. Make sure there is an easily accessible bathroom nearby.

Defend Your Turf And Banish Bugs – These uninvited party crashers can really ruin the mood. In addition to Citronella candles, you may want to invest in some fans.  Not only will fans keep your guest comfortable but did you know that fan-generated wind is a practical way to ward off mosquitoes, since the wind dilutes attractants such as body chemicals and odors plus moves carbon dioxide.  Food covers will also help stop bugs from flying around your game day munchies.

Prep For Pre-Season Weather – Since football season spans from fall to winter, you will experience both warm and cool temperatures. Keep guests comfortable with ceiling fans and heaters. An outdoor fireplace or fire pit is also a great add on, providing great ambiance for your outdoor living spaces.

Wood Burning or Gas Fire Pit

Summerwood -Fire Pit and Seating Wall

Wood Burning or Gas Fire Pit

Adding a wood burning or gas fire pit as part of your outdoor living space will extend the enjoyment of your backyard for you and your guests. They provide warmth, light, a cooking source, and ambiance, making them a natural gathering spot for socializing, entertaining, and relaxation. People are drawn to the campfire-like atmosphere, and before you know it, there will be story-telling and laughter. A fire pit can also serve as an important focal point in your outdoor living space design. When placed where it can be easily seen from your interior living space, it can be enjoyed from the indoors as well. You will want to take this all in consideration when choosing between Wood Burning or Gas Fire Pit.

2014-01-22 11.34.34

The Moore’s wood burning fire pit

When considering whether you want a fire pit wood burning or gas also remember there are many options when it comes to the size, shape and style of a fire pit. You can have a built-in fire pit installed, or you can purchase a portable one that can be moved about your yard. If opting for a built-in fire pit, you’ll be able to choose from a variety of outdoor finishing materials including concrete, stone and brick. And remember, fire pits don’t have to be round-they can be square, L-shaped, triangular, or an entirely custom shape.

The main decision lies in two questions with fire pits: wood burning, or gas?

If you’re looking to heat things up in your back yard, you may want to explore the pros and cons of wood burning or gas. Both flame sources have advantages and disadvantages, and ultimately the choice will come down to your own preference. However, if you keep a few considerations in mind, the decision should be fairly easy.

One type of feature that especially captivates me are gas-powered fire pits. As a fan of wood-burning fires, I was initially skeptical of them, but after years of installing natural gas fire pits and wood-burning fire pits I have realized the pro and cons of both types. While wood burning fire pits are great, the setting has to be ideal. Gas-powered fire pits can be excellent, but there are a few limitations.

Wood-burning fire pits

  • Bigger fires
  • Entertainment by involvement – everyone loves to throw another log on the fire
  • Affordable to install
  • Enhanced ambiance

  • Smell of burning wood sticks to clothing
  • Starting a fire takes effort and can be time-consuming
  • Cleaning up ashes after fire
  • Blowing smoke can create discomfort
  • An area is needed to stockpile wood
  • Storing wood can create an ideal area for bugs and animals to nest
  • Local ordinances may prohibit open burning

Gas-powered fire pits

  • Quick start-up and cutoff at the flip of a switch
  • Clean operating conditions and no clean-up
  • Adds relaxing ambiance with minimal effort
  • No odor on clothes
  • No discomfort from blowing smoke

  • Smaller fires
  • Cost-prohibitive installation compared to wood-burning fire pits603742_513005098736891_1212102573_n

    Gas Fire Pit

I hope that my review of the pros and cons of wood burning and gas fire pits helps you to decide which type of fire pit is the right choice for you and your home.

You can also make your own fire pit, some families enjoy planning and making the fire pit together, making this a family task, and afterwards everyone feels he has contributed to the new pit in the garden.

Sprucing Up Your Patio Furniture

Sprucing Up Your Patio Furniture

With the summer months approaching, many homeowners are thinking about entertaining and dining outside. But, what can be done about dirty, rusty and faded outdoor furniture?

Here some tips for sprucing up your patio furniture:

Don’t buy new! You can replace chair fabric yourself.   Since chair styles don’t change that often, it doesn’t pay to throw out the old chair that you love. You can replace the sling yourself for $60-75 per chair. A new sling chair usually costs more than $150, including the fabric. If you give provide measurements, the manufacturer can make the replacement piece for you and send you the simple hardware for you to put the sling on yourself.   Or if you are crafty and have the time you can re-cover a patio cushion yourself, here is a great blog on how to re-cover a patio cushion or a quick DIY recover of tired patio cushions using a table cloth.

New life for old strap chairs: Surprisingly, styles haven’t changed much. Instead of throwing out old strap chairs and replacing them for hundreds of dollars (usually at least $200 a piece), you can buy your own straps for $2 – 5 each, and put new straps back on your existing frame For under $100, you can have new chairs, and put it together quickly. Do you have a lounge chair that needs a makeover?

Make your own patio furniture using pallets:  Check out this blog: sassy-sparrow  and this one

Treat outdoor fabric gently: Avoid using bleach on your fabrics and DON’T dip them into the pool. This will cause fabrics to fade and dry out. For clean up, use simple products like Fantastic, 409, or even mild dish soap.

Remove rust from iron: Iron furniture often gets dirty and rusty. To clean, simply use a good car wax and buff with a soft cloth.

How to spray paint old out dated patio furniture:

Check out this blog on how to paint patio furniture

and this blog on how to spray paint plastic patio furniture using KrylonFusion For Plastic :

Best new products to avoid rusting and fading: Coated plastic and titanium are popular new outdoor materials and don’t rust or blow away in the wind. Treated paints and foam products can be kept out year round, and can be used on tables and chairs. Heavier aluminums function like iron but don’t rust as quickly.

Replacing fabric cushions: Notice I said “replacing” here. Usually, you can’t match the colors because the fabric colors fade over time, and color palettes change. Your best bet is to replace all the fabric on your outdoor pieces.  Remember adding color is the best tip to sprucing up your patio.

Simple tips to secure your backyard patio

QwHgPkSimple tips to secure your backyard patio

Burglaries and Backyard theft is on the rise. The theft will be added to a growing tally in Harris County and Houston, where in the past five and a half years there have been a staggering 224,000 burglaries of homes and businesses, most of which are never solved. Currently, the Houston Police Department says it clears around 11 percent of burglaries.  The rate of break-ins, meanwhile, is on the upswing in Houston. During the first six months of 2012, the city’s 13,016 burglaries were 4.5 percent more than during the same period last year, per HPD officials.

There’s no reason why you should make a thief’s job easy. Burglary, on the whole, is an opportunist crime. A property that presents itself as unoccupied and insecure is far more likely to be targeted than one which is properly secured.  Don’t let it happen to You Whether you are leaving your property for a few minutes, an hour, a day or a week or more it is imperative that you take as many measures as you can to deter would be burglars.  The last thing you want or need is an intruder/intruders in your property. Apart from the probable loss of your belongings for most people it is a very traumatic experience and should be avoided at all costs.

Patio furniture, grills, tv’s, exotic plants, even garden art and lawnmowers get snagged or vandalized.

Here are a few simple tips to help you secure your belongings in the back yard and keep thieves from invading your home through a back door.

  • Grow your confidence. Landscaping is a two-edged sword. Trees planted to keep a thief out can also hide him while he takes advantage of your absence. Weigh and consider the pros and cons of using plants as part of your defense. If you do decide to use live barriers, consider beautiful plants that can hinder. Rose bushes, berry bushes, Firethorn and Hawthorne are great examples to use around the windows of your home. Place them under the easiest access areas. A lawn forgotten is also a sure sign that you don’t care about your home and may have left a way in. Mow your lawn and keep your yard clean.
  • Document your inventory. It involves some time and effort, but taking pictures of items or videotaping your property can help you with insurance claims. List your furniture, grills, smokers, gardening tools and anything else you deem important and valuable. Make sure to create an itemized list to go with your visual proof.
  • Make your mark. Place your name, address, zip code or other unique symbol on your belongings. Place them in discrete locations, so they won’t be noticed or removed. This will help you identify and claim them, should they be stolen. It’s wise, especially if you are using a symbol, to record where you place these identifying marks in the inventory descriptions.
  • Nail it down. Everything from patio furniture to BBQ grills, even heavy fixtures, can be bolted down, bound with cables or cemented in place.
  • Make ‘em run. Another option for securing items is installing alarms that create an excessive amount of noise. Cable alarms can be used for most items in your yard, including riding mowers, tables and chairs, even coolers. The costs are low and the effects are impressive.
  • Know your neighbors.   Neighbors are one of the best deterrents you can have. Sadly, many homeowners don’t get to know one another as they should. Simply by being aware of one another and keeping an eye out for suspicious activities, most thefts can be deterred.  If you go out of town you can ask your neighbors to watch your home.  Host a street barbeque, a fun way to get to know your neighbors.
  • Be careful what info. you give on Social Media.  Never announce on social media sites like Facebook or Twitter that you are out of town or when you will be out of town, you don’t want that information in the wrong hands.
  • Fence it off. A good, strong, six-foot fence will not only keep out most burglars, it can keep animals out of your garden. If you have a fence, check for holes and damage that may need to be repaired or replaced. Do NOT rely on simple lift latches on your gate; these will not deter a thief. Install latches and use padlocks to secure gates.
  • Light it up. If thieves hate to be noticed, one of the best deterrents is to shine a spotlight on them. The best way to do that is installing motion sensors in the backyard. Place them over or near entrances around the house. These devices are cost effective and not only provide safety; they provide extra light on those late nights when you come home.
  • Lock it up. When you leave your home, make sure you lock the windows and doors. It may sound silly, but homeowners often forget or simply don’t mind leaving a backdoor open. Chances are a theft will happen during the day while you’re at work. Thieves, by nature, will simply find the path of least resistance, walk in, take your valuables and leave. Don’t give them that opportunity and check the house before leaving. Make sure your shed is also locked and secured with padlocks.
  • A man’s best friend. Remember that a good line of defense can also be a good friend. Dogs are a wonderful addition to the family and an effective deterrent to potential theft. Don’t want an actual dog? Post signs about the invisible beast living in the house.
  • Keep an eye on it all. The last option, albeit it can be an expensive one, is a security camera system. You should know that a truly effective system is both costly to buy and to maintain over time. Another option, combined with the tips mentioned above, is to install fake ones. Give the dirt bags the illusion that you have your house all under control. The simple presence of a camera can encourage a thief to pick an easier target.

I hope this information will keep you and your love ones safe.  Please contact Billy Parker Exteriors with any questions you may have on securing your patio or home.

How To Inspect Siding

How To Inspect Siding

There are some basic tips on how to inspect siding and important things to look for when inspecting your siding.  Regular inspections of your siding are an important step in protecting the underlying structure of your home. There are some signs that you can look for on different types of siding to determine whether you need to make a repair. These tips will help you identify any potential problems before more serious issues arise.

Many homes in the Houston area that were built between the late seventies and into the late nineties had what is known as T-111 siding installed on the exterior.  T-111 siding was a simple plywood siding that looked fine for the first couple of years after it was installed.  Unfortunately, over the course of several years, the siding started to look weathered as it began to deteriorate.  Because the T-111 siding was never designed to last more than a few years, homeowners needed to replace it fairly regularly to keep their home’s exterior looking fine.

Signs your siding needs replacing:

  • ROT

  • The most obvious problem with T-111 is that it was actually made from plywood.  Over time, and especially in wet climates, the plywood separates or simply rots away.  This happens no matter how many times the siding is painted or treated.  Once rotting begins, the plywood becomes a breeding ground for bugs and fungus.  As the bugs have a field day within the planks, the rotting issue becomes even worse.

  • 7u5aFB
  • Sagging or Brittle
  • Vinyl siding was created in an effort to address the issues associated with T-111 siding.  Unfortunately, vinyl siding can cause similar issues.  With vinyl siding, moisture is often trapped over the course of time between the sub-siding and the vinyl sheets, causing rot to develop and creating a place for bugs to call home.  In addition, there is another issue that is unique to vinyl siding: extreme temperatures cause the vinyl siding to sag or become brittle.
  • WY8aon
  • Warped, Swelled or Buckled
  • Today, there is a much better siding option.  HardiePlank® Siding was designed, from the beginning, to stand the test of time.  HardiePlank® Siding resists damage from the impact of flying objects, fire, hail, humidity and thankfully, all types of bug infestation and rot damage.  The reason that it is so much more durable is that this siding is not made from materials prone to deterioration.  It is also important to note that HardiePlank® Siding will not warp, swell, crack or buckle, even in extreme weather conditions.
  • 42DkAN
  • HardiePlank® Siding is made with a variety of materials all specifically designed to work together to protect the home and keep it looking beautiful for years.  Best of all, the siding selection is quite large; it is available in many different looks, styles and colors.  You can be assured that you will find just the right siding to fit your architecture style and landscaping, increasing your home’s curb appeal.

Once installed, HardiePlank® Siding will look the same year in and year out; the job of regularly painting your home will become a chore of the past.  This siding will hold its color for more than a decade, several times longer than wood siding.

Most homeowners are concerned about the safety of their family and their property.  HardiePlank® siding is a fiber cement product which means that it is resistant to fire.  This makes it a much safer choice over other siding materials on the market.  HardiePlank® Siding is recommended for installation where non-combustible construction is required.

Increase Curb Appeal and Resale Value with James Hardie® Siding:

  • HGTV’s “20 Ways to Add Value to Your Home” #1: Spruce Up the Siding
  • Money magazine singles out HardiePlank® siding as a great value; a smart investment that delivers on durability
  • Smart Money magazine lists James Hardie in Smart Fiscal Sense feature
  • #1 Quality Exterior Lap Siding Product for the past eleven years. Builder magazine
  • James Hardie® siding is featured on over 20 Southern LivingCoastal Living andSunset magazine Idea Houses. And on over 30 Houses on ABC’s Extreme Home Makeover.

With durability, flexibility, and beauty, the only logical choice is this James Hardie Siding. It will give you the look you want, with the long-term returns that you desire in any home investment.

One of the first aspects of outdoor pizza oven construction is determining the size of your oven.  Some standard pizza ovens start at the 32″ to 36″ size.  This interior dimension allows for fast heat times of 35 to 45 minutes, and still allows for the cooking of 2 – 10″ pizzas at the same time.  Since pizzas can cook in under 2 minutes in a wood burning pizza oven, this makes an incredible outdoor evening with friends, family & loved-ones!

The second aspect of pizza oven design is the integration with the outdoor kitchen area.  Since Billy Parker Exteriors specialize in all aspects of outdoor construction, we can help you plan and decorate your complete outdoor kitchen area!  From stone accents to an authentic brick pizza ovens – our masons can build just about any type of outdoor pizza oven Just pick your size, pick your specifications, and we do the rest!

You will enjoy years of outdoor cooking with family and friends!  Plus, enjoy some great-tasting “authentic” wood fired pizza!
